That sounds like a huge coral. If your measurement is accurate, that's only about 3" short of a record. I've seen some corals with a considerable amount of black scale tipping on the red bands here in central FL.
On a side note, in the current Reptiles magazine there is a photo of a melanistic texas coral snake that is completely black with a single light colored band around it's neck. It was incorrectly identified over the phone as a ringneck after it bit someone.
