Absolutely. Data collection is priority #1. Until we know the size of the gene pool we're working with, not to mention the population growth rate, I don't think we should be producing more hybrids than we already are.
However, if it turns out that the population of US diamonds is relatively small (probably true) and shrinking (I have no clude), hybridization becomes more of a viable option.
