What I meant by gap was the distance between the top of the box and the bottom of the shelf above that acts as the lid.

So if you're using a box that is exactly 6" tall and the distance between any two shelves is 6 1/8", the "gap" would be 1/8".

1/8" is about what I'd shoot for with a ball python rack, maybe even a bit more.

When you pick out your boxes measure several of them and find out how tall they are or if there is any variance. Then you can start deciding how to cut your spacer.

It's much easier to fill in too great of a gap than to deal with too little of a gap. So that's why I recommend too much vs. too little gap.
