I've done this in a wood cage where I couldn't heat it from below. It worked out fine. You should always use a dimmer with a heat pad, even if the manufacturer claims it gets no more than 100 deg. On a warm day you will need to turn it down some in all probability. Oh, and when I cut the plug off so the cord could be slipped through a small hole in the cage, I decided to try and protect the cord a little. I bought some plastic tubing, alot like aquarium tubing but a larger ID, and slipped that over the cord. Made cleaning a little easier when the snake pooped all over the cord.
