I'm wondering if the cost savings you've seen with your technique applies only to the super high quality laminated plywoods found at cabinet shops or if it also applies to the grade of laminated plywood found at Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, et. al.
My local stores don't offer 1/4" oak laminate at all that great of a price and when they do have Luan it's pricey. In the meantime I can buy 3/4" sheet of oak or birch laminated plywood for about $35.
Quality is not mind-boggling good, but it good enough for me.
