Carole -- be careful of any box. They can heat up much too quickly if left in full sun; aquariums are worse. Shade at one end is fine as long as you don't leave them alone and have the sun move on you--exposing the box to full sun and instant death.

My exercise pen would have ventilation on both sides and the top. The shaded end would have 24 inches of the top covered with ventilated pegboard and 12 inches of pegboard on each side. And the shady end would be situated in full shade under a tree. The sunny end would be in full sun for most of the day with more of it in the shade during the hot afternoons we experience here in El Paso.

I'll post photos at my web site when I DO build the thing with a full report of the results. Won't be this season, however.
