Most adults from the dryer "lowlands" are in the 5 foot range, but I've found some around 7 feet. Undeniably big enough to eat a mid-sized cottontail! The dwarfs tend to come from higher elevations in the mountain foothills (like Red Lodge in the foothills of the Beartooth mountains). The area I live in is usually termed "semi-arid desert grassland". The landscape is punctuated by dry valleys rimmed by 1-2 hundred foot sandstone cliffs. Temperatures often soar above 100 degrees in the summer and dip well below 0 in the winter. Vegitation includes various grasses, cacti, yucca, and scattered pines. Just to give an idea of the snakes' habitat.
