First Gopher snake of the year spotted - very sad

Howdy all!
I am new to this particular forum and found this great looking Gopher Snake west of Salt Lake City, Utah. I think it is called a Great Basin Gopher Snake, but I am not sure.
Unfortunately, this poor little guy had been hit by a cyclist and his back was broken. He died a few minutes after I got to him. I did not see who hit him but he was in the road when I stopped to move him to the grass. There were several cyclists I had passed just before reaching him. He had no visible signs of trauma, but noticeable paralysis just below his neck. It really broke my heart to see such a great creature knocked down right at the start of the spring season. He/she was almost 4 feet long too. I have never understood this kind of senseless cruelty.
