::recently, i was reading a book on snakes and saw the scientific name 'P. catenifer sayi'. is this right? i thought 'melanoleucus' was the species and 'catenifer' and 'sayi' were subspecies. just wondering if anybody could clear me up on this.

i know the genus is Pituophis. what i was saying is which is right: P. catenifer sayi or P. melanoleucus sayi?
