The spotted python is a good choice.In fact any antaresia species such as maculosa stimpsoni or childreni would be a great species to start off with.They grow to a managable size are easy to feed and handle good.It all comes down to personal choice.Considering your intentions are to 1 day own a green tree (boidae) I would stay within that species range to gain the experience in keeping boas. Whatever decision you make do yourself a favour and read alot on the species. Get there temp,cage,feeding etc requirements down to a T.All the best and I hope you enjoy the hobby.
