My personal favorite is the Western Hognose, and I frequently recommend them to beginners. They are small, sturdy, and unbelievably docile. Not to mention cute! Even some firm ophiophobes have smiled at the sight of my little girl's funny face.

http://www.albinohognose.com/ is a good place to look at these guys, the man who runs West Texas Reptiles has helped me out quite a bit.

As for kings or milks.....Well, I've been bitten by fewer kings than milks since I started working in a pet store, but I've never owned either so I won't bother you with an uninformed answer. ^_^
