Fire Ants in Florida?

I've built an outdoor enclosure and I'd like some info on how to deal w/ fire ants...after a recent rainfall we noticed a couple small ant hills popped up in the enclosure!

A long time ago I read about a product called Diatamacious Earth, I would like to know if anyone can tell me how it is used? Can the animals come in contact with it? What is the story?
