'Ackies' stay around a foot. I don't know how 'handleable' they are, I don't have one. The good thing is that you can get captive bred ones, the bad news is that they're several hundred bucks. That's cheaper than a big monitor in the long run, but you could get a leopard gecko and its whole setup for under that. Ackies are pretty awesome, though, and not something everyone has.
