I would highly advise a leopard gecko. Although I don't think any reptile can really be playful, these are great, easy to keep pets. They rarely, if ever, bite. They don't get much larger than 10" and come in a wide variety of colors and morphs some which sell for $30 some that sell for $500(depends on morph).
