By the characteristics you want in a lizard, you'll probably want to look into bearded dragons. they are easy to care for, easy to tame, and stay under 2ft. long.

I would also look into leopard geckos. they are the best beginner lizards I can think of.

There's a pic of my patternless leopard gecko. She's great.
