Ackies average 2 feet, not under a foot. However, they don't require a large enclosure, they are quite active and endearing, and they are more tolerant than more monitors with regards to interaction and husbandry mistakes.
Timors are generally quite shy. They are not "tame" monitors, but have some qualities that their keepers find to be endearing and interesting. They are also quite pretty.
