Chameleons???

I've been wanting to purchase a couple veil chameleons. I've never had a lizard before so I decided to do some research and learn more about them. I picked up a book at my local pet shop and it really made it seem as though they are wicked hard to take care of and don't usually live very long. Is this true? I really like the way the chameleons were so chill and not like running all over the place smacking into the glass at the pet store. Any suggestions on other lizards that might be better if chameleons aren't recommended?
