I have kept my male BD in a 55 gallon breeder tank since he was just one month old. He is now around a year and a half old very healthy and 20 inches long. I do however let him out of his tank nearly everyday, to roam around on the back porch (screened in). I live in Central Florida so through most of the year the temperatures are ideal for outside roaming. I say go for it.
