I certainly understand your frustration. No wonder petstores continue to carry such a bad rep. I certainly know the customer would rather have valid information about how to properly care for his new pet than get false information and have it die on him. Your boss should fire this gal if she doesn't take the time to at least learn and understand the basics about proper herp care.
I guess the only real way petstore and petstore can be encouraged to learn more about the animals they sell is to offer them lessons, probably be free of charge but some sort of educational program could be provided. Heck maybe offer free 1 hour or half hour training sessions for new pet owners and staff alike..could even hold it in a section of the pet store..may even bring more business.
