The dimensions of even “normal-sized” ball python eggs are so large in relation to the females that lay people are often amazed (You mean THOSE came out of that snake?). Less well known even among herpetologists is that these snakes frequently deposit viable eggs which are much smaller than average. In the 1930’s, C.R.S. Pittman noted in A Guide to the Snakes of Uganda that ball pythons (and I’m going strictly from memory here since I don’t own this book) often lay “half-sized” eggs but the resulting hatchlings soon “catch up” in size.
Although I didn’t do a complete search of my records, I came up with one interesting clutch which illustrates both extremes of the size continuum of ball python eggs.
Eight fertile eggs were deposited on April 19, 1987 with weights in grams as follows: 126.3, 124.3, 124.0, 122.9, 117.3, 111.8, 65.8, 60.5. Weight of female after depositing 852.9 g mass of eggs was 1829 g. Mean egg mass was 106.6 g. The clutch was incubated artificially and all eggs hatched successfully, with the first pipping on June 17th and the last hatching on June 21st. Hatchling weight ranged from 37.6 g to 85.6 g.

:Hi all,
:I had a female lay what seemed like a huge egg today (125 grams). That got me wondering the largest/smallest sized eggs you all have had hatch out.
:Thanks, Christy
