I have the Raytek on and really like it. One thing I would recommend is to get one with the laser sight on it. They only cost a little more but are extremely worth it. Not sure about your other question, I think the temp is taken from where your shooting at so it would be hard to get a temp one inch above the surface. You could maybe shoot at a hide box or somethng that is a little above the surface to get an idea. One thing I like about them is I can take multiple reading from different parts of the cage to "see" the heat gradient.
