some are viable but infertile, like mules, and some can't be made to work at all - sometimes the problem is genetic, sometimes it's more logistical (what are called prezygotic isolation mechanisms, like different breeding seasons or mating rituals).
:Anyway, within-genus hybrids are *certainly* possible, in many cases - jungle corns, bateaters, chongles, etc, etc, etc. I'd just like to know whether the ball/burmese has been attempted, It's not out of the question, and sounds like it could be a beautiful snake...
