It never ceases to amaze me how some people view these animals that they take in as pets. I wish we could do more to spread the word about responsible pet ownership as it does not seem to be reaching as many people as it should.
Anyways, on to this suspected calcium deficiency. Regular/daily supplementation is going to be the key here.
Do you have a UV light over the anole? If not and you are just giving him plain calcium, he will not be able to absorb and metabolize the calcium. The UV rays help the reptiles synthesize vitamin D3 which is critical to the absorption of calcium. If you do not have a UV light over the anole, make sure you are giving it a vitamin D3 and calcium supplement daily.
Another trick that we use around here is to provide the affected reptiles with an oral calcium such as Calcium Sandoz which you can get at your drugstore (just ask them for it and they will give it to you). All you need to do is squirt a bit onto the anole's nose and let it lap it up (it is very sweet so the reptiles just go nuts over it).
With something the size of an anole, just a couple of drops once per day will be fine. But do not use this in conjunction with a powdered calcium supplement - too much calcium will harm them.
This oral calcium is used to essentially jumpstart the system and start repairing the damage. After a while, one can switch back to regular supplementation (should probably continue with daily supplementation at that point).
But Shorty, please do not beat yourself up like this. You have done so much for this anole than anyone could ever dream of. You have taken on a very large responsibility. You are giving it a chance that it was never going to be given before. You truly are a wonderful person for even trying! Too many people would have just put it outside to die.
Hopefully the little anole will pull through - she has waged quite the battle so far and has is always amazing us. She is very resilient and fighting so hard. But sometimes, one can only do so much for them...let's hope she can make it.
Just continue what you are doing - there is really nothing else any one could ask you to do.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you and the anole! All fingers and toes are crossed!
