Most of the time you can tell the sex of alligators by physical characteristics. Mature males have larger, wider heads and females have lipstick. J/K. If you cannot tell just by looking at them, you will have to probe them just like a snake. This holds true for all Alligator Lizards in the USA. I am not sure about Abronia or other tropical genera.
