THE INDEPENDENT (South Africa) 06 December 00 Shell-shocked church marvels at slow labour
Ondo, Nigeria - Think of labour being slow, and then think again.
A 30-year-old Nigerian woman, Tawa Ahmed, told a large and credulous gathering at her church here on Wednesday that she had been pregnant for five years and then given birth to a 1kg tortoise on Monday.
With the reptile snuggled up beside her, Ahmed told the crowd she had got pregnant five years ago in Lagos and returned to her parents' homein Ondo after she failed to give birth.
The pastor of the Rock of Ages Gospel Church, Olusegun Mayaki, said he had organised a 14-day religious event to ease Ahmed's labour pains and admitted to being "surprised" when she eventually gave birth to the tortoise.
With her husband said to be standing by her, Ahmed was asked by a reporter to explain how it was she gave birth to a reptile but was ordered not to speak by the pastor, who said she was "tired".
Doctor Fausat Aragbaye of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, who was one of many visitors who came to check on the woman's condition, said she doubted the story but advised it could perhaps be confirmed by a thorough medical examination.

PRESS ASSOCIATION (London, UK) 07 December 00 Woman tells churchgoers she gave birth to tortoise
A Nigerian woman has told a church congregation that her five-year pregnancy finally ended when she gave birth to a tortoise.
Tawa Ahmed, from Ondo, made her announcement with her husband and the as yet unnamed 2lb 2oz reptile beside her.
She is reported to have given birth after a 14-day religious event was organised to ease her pain.
Local pastor, Olusegen Mayaki, was in charge of the event but said he was surprised to see the tortoise.
According to IOL reporters asked Mrs Ahmed how she came to have such an unusual offspring but she was ordered by Pastor Mayaki to be quiet.
Doctors are hoping to examine the 30-year-old woman to verify her claims but many local people are well known for their easy acceptance of miracles
